HEAD COACH: Freddy Johnson (336-314-4701) … EMAIL: freddyjohnson@greensboroday.org
Legendary head coach Freddy Johnson (1,257-335 during a 49-year career) makes his second trip to the City of Palms, entering this season as the fifth-winningest coach in high school basketball history (COP Hall of Famer Gary McKnight is second). Johnson has guided Greensboro Day to 14 state championships in 22 title-game appearances, while bagging 30 conference crowns along the way. But this group could rank among his best, with a pair of MaxPreps All-Americans – 6-1 JR Micah Gunter (17.0 ppg, 4.0 apg, 2.5 steals) and 6-9 SOPH Grant Duggins (10.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.5 apg) – ready for a jump to the next level. The Bengals won their final 17 games, including a 69-59 win over IMG Academy on Dec. 30 and an impressive 62-34 rout of Concord Academy in the NCISAA Class 3A final.
